For families
Clear answers to common questions about care, matching, coverage, and service areas. Care and benefit details vary, so confirm the details for your family before booking.
A birth doula offers nonmedical emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, labor, and shortly after birth. The exact prenatal visits, on-call period, and postpartum follow-up depend on the doula and the care agreement.
A postpartum doula supports the family after birth with practical newborn care guidance, recovery support, and household routines. A birth doula focuses on preparation and labor support. Midwives and nurses provide clinical care; doulas do not diagnose or treat medical conditions. A nanny generally focuses on ongoing child care rather than the family’s postpartum transition.
You can start looking during pregnancy so there is time to interview and plan. Some families reach out later or after birth. Availability varies by doula, location, and due date, so tell us your timing when you inquire.
Doulas can support different birth plans, including hospital care and cesarean births. The role and whether a doula can be present in a particular room depend on the hospital and care team. Ask your doula and hospital about the plan for your birth.
Tell us about your location, timing, support needs, and preferences through Find My Doula. We use that information to suggest doulas whose service areas and profiles fit. You can meet potential doulas before deciding whom to hire.
We serve Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, Sonoma, Sacramento, Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties. The doulas and services available for a particular request can vary.
Birth support may include prenatal planning, comfort measures during labor, partner support, and a postpartum follow-up. Visits, on-call timing, backup arrangements, and fees are set out in the care agreement with your doula.
Postpartum doulas may help with newborn care education, feeding support, recovery routines, and practical household support. Ask about overnight care in your inquiry; hours and availability depend on the doula.
The Birth Companions can help with direct Kaiser billing for eligible care. Coverage depends on your specific plan, provider eligibility, and documentation. Contact your plan and our team before booking to confirm what applies to you.
Eligibility for HSA or FSA spending and reimbursement through another insurer depends on your plan and administrator. Ask our team what documentation can be provided, and check with your plan before relying on reimbursement.
Medi-Cal offers a doula benefit, but plan rules and provider enrollment matter. Ask your Medi-Cal managed care plan and our team whether your chosen doula can provide covered services before booking. We will not assume eligibility from your insurance card alone.
Ask about the backup arrangement during your interview and review it in your care agreement. If your doula becomes unavailable, our team can help coordinate with an available backup according to that agreement.
